Safety measures
When hiring a skip, you will need to ensure you have the relevant permits from your local council if you wish to keep the skip on the street where the property is situated. After this, you should take into account the following safety measures;
Cones and amber flashing lights are placed around the skip in the dark to warn road users of its presence
Reflective markers should be fixed on both ends of the skip
Ensure the skip hasn’t been placed over any manhole covers, drains, grates or other utility access points
Ensure the contents don’t protrude from the sides of the skip, as this creates hazards to road users and pedestrians
Make sure you don’t over-fill the skip
Make sure there are no hazardous materials which could pose a risk of fire, explosion or environmental damage within the skip
Contact your local council for a skip licence if you want to put a skip on a public road.
In most areas, skip hire companies are responsible for getting skip licences, also sometimes called skip permits. In some areas, you’ll need to do it yourself.
You need a licence for:
skips
hippobags and other skip bags
You can apply for a skip permit using the GOV.UK website
https://www.gov.uk/apply-skip-permit
If you don’t put up the required safety lights and markings, you could be fined up to £1,000.
